Cloud Forest Owl

In Costa Rican mountains
water lets gravity
help it find a way
to the sea.
Pulling bubbles, leaves,
ripples and reflections
over brink after brink
of water worn rock,
tumbling as
roaring spray
that nourishes
moss and plants
clinging to cliff faces.
Foaming over rocky teeth
through canyons
of overhanging trees,
with roots dangling
into torrents
like lines
for soil.

Nearby, beyond the mist,
an owl butterfly
has emerged
from its chrysalis
pumping up wings
that scientists
and creationists
will both use
to prove their case.

The butterfly will use them
to try to stay alive.
