Prisoner

Promises unkept,
The swan never showed itself.
Skin deep is enough.

Standards never met,
In every stare, a judgment.
What gives them the right?

Locked in flesh and bone,
Fighting for the kindnesses
Lavished on the "fair".

None should have to prove
Worthiness to receive love,
If they can give love.

Small consolation
That the ravages of age
Will condemn them all.

Lonely, longing eyes,
Watching from living cages,
While the lovely play.
